1810 May 23, Sarah Margaret Fuller born at Cambridgeport, Massachusetts.
1818 Met Ellen Kilshaw, British visitor.
1824-25 Attended the Prescotts’ school at Groton, Massachusetts.
1825-33 Lived in Cambridge; knew member of Harvard College class of 1829: William Henry Channing, James Freeman Clarke, George Davis; also Frederic Henry Hedge, Eliza Farrar, Anna Barker.
1833 Moved with family to farm at Groton; taught four youngest children: Ellen, Arthur, Richard, Lloyd; prepared to write life of Goethe.
1835 Summer, traveled with Fanars and Samuel Gray Ward to Trenton Falls, New York, and met Harriet Martineau; autumn, serious illness in Groton, may have caused spinal curvature; October l, death of Timothy Fuller.
1836 First visited Emersons at Concord; began teaching at Bronson Alcott’s Temple School.
1837 Joined Transcendental Club; became friendly with Caroline Sturgis; June, began eighteen months of teaching at Greene Street School, Providence.
1839 Sold farm and moved to Jamaica Plain; published translation of Eckermann’s Conversations with Goethe (Boston: Hilliard, Gray); initiated Conversation classes in Boston and Cambridge, which continued until 1844.
1840 July, began editing The Dial and continued until July 1842.
1841 April, Brook Farm opened.
1842 Published Günderode, a translation of Bettina Brentano von Amim’s Die Günderode (Boston: E. P. Peabody).
1843 Traveled west with James and Sarah Clarke.
1844 Published Summer on the Lakes, in 1843 (Boston: Little and Brown); completed Woman in the Nineteenth Century at Fishkill, New York; December, moved to the Greeleys’ home in New York and became literary critic and social reporter for New-York Tribune, continuing as journalist until 1850.
1845 Published Woman in the Nineteenth Century (New York: Greeley & McElrath); met James Nathan.
1846 Published Papers on Literature and Art (New York: Wiley and Putnam); Spring, moved to Brooklyn Heights; August, sailed for Europe with Marcus and Rebecca Spring; traveled in England and Scotland; met Mazzini; autumn, went to Paris.
1847 Met Mickiewicz and Sand in Paris; visited Genoa and Naples before first stay in Rome in spring; met Giovanni Angelo Ossoli and Costanza Arconati; summer, traveled in northern Italy and Switzerland; October, took rooms in Via del Corso, Rome, and became Ossoli’s lover.
1848 January and March, uprisings in Italy; summer in Aquila and Rieti; September 5, Angelo Eugenio Filippo Ossoli born; November, took rooms on Piazza Barberini, Rome.
1849 February, Roman Republic proclaimed; March, visited son in Rieti; April through June, during siege of Rome by French, directed Hospital of the Fate Bene Fratelli; July, returned to Rieti; September, moved to Florence.
1850 May 17, sailed for America; July 19, died in shipwreck at Fire Island with Ossoli and child.
