Thoreau’s Lectures After Walden: Lecture 58

LECTURE 58

25 February 1858, Thursday; 7:30 p.m.
Concord, Massachusetts; Brick or Centre School House, High School Room
“AN EXCURSION TO THE MAINE WOODS”

NARRATIVE OF EVENT: According to the records of the Concord Lyceum, “D. H. Thoreau lectured [on], or ‘told the story’ of, his excursion into Maine last summer.” Thoreau’s lecture was the last of twelve in the season’s course (MassLyc, p. 173). Surprisingly, although some twenty years had passed since David Henry changed his name to Henry David, Thoreau is here still listed as “D. H. Thoreau” by the secretary of the Lyceum in his own hometown, John Brown, Jr.
ADVERTISEMENTS, REVIEWS, AND RESPONSES: None known.
DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC: See lecture 57 above.
