Portfolio of Cartes de Visite

A popular form of souvenir in the mid to late 19th Century, cartes de visite (“visiting cards”) are small in scale, and include an albumen print of a photograph mounted onto cardstock backing. The Walden Woods Projects collection contains 22 cartes de visite of notable American and European individuals from the 19th Century, influential in the fields of social reform, politics, literature, and natural sciences, a select number of which are shown below.
