Join us for this first-of-its-kind Statewide Read in Massachusetts!

The Walden Woods Project, The Honors College at UMass Lowell, Massachusetts Center for the Book, and Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area are thrilled to announce the Thoreau Bicentennial Statewide Read in celebration of the 200th birthday of the great American writer and philosopher Henry David Thoreau. Our goal is for every town or city in Massachusetts to participate, by coordinating at least one event in 2017 that brings community members together to read a work by Thoreau.

The coordinators of each town/city’s Read event can choose when in 2017 they want to carry out their Read; how they want to implement their Read (book group, public reading, surrounded by a day of activities, etc.); and which Thoreau piece they will read. With that said, to facilitate some shared experience among participants across the state, we will provide one brief excerpt from Walden that we do hope participants will read in addition to their chosen piece. Go here for more information about how to get involved in the Statewide Read.
