The Walden Woods Project assisted in the creation of WETA’s Henry David Thoreau Discussion & Engagement Guide. The goal of the guide is to help public media stations, libraries, schools, organizations, and individuals create events, facilitate conversations, and create engagement opportunities around Henry David Thoreau. The documentary gives communities an opportunity to participate in a national conversation about American history, the intersection of environmental justice and social equity; moral consciousness, civic responsibility, and nonviolent resistance; and the quest for an authentic and purposeful life. The guide points to resources, partners, and suggestions that truly connect, invigorate, and inspire communities. Some of these resources include The WWP’s Where’s Your Walden?® activity, discussion questions on varied topics relating to Thoreau, and a Thoreau-inspired reading list for adults and children.
In addition to this guide, The WWP partnered PBS stations WUCF and WETA to design a suite of resources that PBS stations can distribute to their communities. These materials make it easy for people of all ages to explore the world around them through three simple, repeatable habits: noticing, wondering, and reflecting. A trio of resources within the collection called “Henry At Home” builds on lessons from The WWP’s Henry’s Hat® elementary curriculum, reframing them into hands-on experiences for the whole family.
