Since 1990, The Walden Woods Project has led the fight to protect one of the most iconic landscapes in the world – Henry David Thoreau’s Walden Woods surrounding Walden Pond in Massachusetts – a National Historic Landmark. We have a successful track record working with stakeholders in thwarting incompatible development that would undermine the historic and environmental integrity of Walden Woods — widely recognized as the birthplace of the American conservation movement.

We incorporate the land we protect, as well as Thoreau’s writings and philosophy, into the public programs we offer. These include professional development opportunities for teachers and a global program for students that fosters an environmental ethic, instills a sense of stewardship for our natural resources and encourages awareness/engagement in the worldwide environmental challenges of our time. Our library, open to the public, is staffed by a full time curator, and is walking distance from Walden Pond. It houses an unparalleled research collection related to Thoreau. Funding for The Walden Woods Project is derived from major donors, foundation support, individual contributions and special events. The Walden Woods Project operates in a fiscally responsible manner, with 70-75% of revenues applied directly to fulfilling our mission and covering program-related expenses.

The Walden Woods Project is an equal opportunity employer.  Our organization does not discriminate against individuals in hiring, employment, promotion, compensation and other conditions of employment, on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status.  We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our staff, volunteers, and those who participate in our programs.
