the Thoreau Log.
18 May 1857. Concord, Mass.

Thoreau writes in his journal:

P.M.—To Bateman’s Pond via Yellow Swamp with Pratt.

Pratt says he saw the first rhodora and cultivated pear out yesterday. Many are now setting out pines and other evergreens, transplanting some wildness into the neighborhood of their houses . . .

(Journal, 9:369-371)
