  Iconic Places is the first guidebook to Henry David Thoreau's most defin
 ing place\, visited by half a million people each year. Many more know it 
 as the fountainhead of America's environmental consciousness.\n\n\n\nIn th
 e guide\, Thoreau devotee Robert M. Thorson takes us on an amble around th
 e pond's shoreline\, pausing to explore people\, events\, and the natural 
 world in fifteen special places. With quotations from Thoreau's Walden thr
 oughout\, stop by stop\, the place of his book merges with the book of his
  place.\n\nDr. Robert M. Thorson is a Professor of Geology at the Univers
 ity of Connecticut and is author of The Guide to Walden Pond: An Explorati
 on of the History\, Nature\, Landscape and Literature of One of America's 
 Most Iconic Places (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt\; Forthcoming March 13\, 201
 8)\; The Boatman: Henry David Thoreau's River Years (Harvard\, 2017)\; Wa
 lden's Shore: Henry David Thoreau and Nineteenth Century Science (Harvard
 \, 2014)\; and Beyond Walden: The Hidden History of America’s Kettle La
 kes (Bloomsbury\, 2009).\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nThis event is FREE and open to the 
 public. Doors will open at 7 PM for a wine and cheese reception\, sponsore
 d by The Cheese Shop of Concord.  The talk will begin promptly at 7:30 PM
