“What lies behind
us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lives
within us.”
This
quotation has been equally misattributed to Thoreau, Emerson, and
Oliver Wendell Holmes, but does not appear in the works of these
three authors. The source of the quotation, or the misattribution,
has not been identified, although the earliest attribution found to
date is from the March 1955 issue of Federal Probation in
which it is attributed to William Morrow.
