Herbert Wendell Gleason (1855-1937)

Inventory of Thoreau Society Prints of Herbert W. Gleason Photographs
ca.  1899-1937

Scope and Content Note: This portion of The Thoreau Society Archives consists of three boxes of modern prints of Gleason photographs of “Thoreau Country” procured from either Roland Robbins or Nick Mills.  Roland Robbins, a past President of the Thoreau Society, purchased the glass negatives of the Gleason images from the print house of John Handy when it closed.  He preserved and reproduced them for publication and purchase.  The collection was later sold to Nick Mills who continued to reproduce and market the images.  The glass plate negatives have recently been purchased by the Concord Free Public Library for their collection.
