Contemporary Notices

Walden; or, Life in
the Woods
_______
Watchman
and Reflector [Boston] (5 October 1854): p. 158
"A
Life in the Woods," within twenty miles of Boston may strike the
reader as hardly affording enough of material in the shape of incident and
adventure, for a fair sized volume like the present. But he must read and
learn his mistake, for this beyond dispute is one of the most original,
eccentric and suggestive books which the season has brought out. The
writer, in relating his own experience, which he does with naivete,
shows much power of reflection, and a philosophic knowledge of men and
things.
