10-53 Went a chestnutting this Pm to Smiths Grove
[XX] with
4 ladies I raked & we got 6 1/2 quarts
[XX] the
ground being bare & the leaves not frozen.
[XX] I
found 35 chestnuts left by a mouse (?) in his fallery
[XX]
Many chestnuts are still in the burrs on the
[XX] ground.
Aunt found a twig which had ap. fallen
[XX] prematurely
with 8 small burrs all within
[XX] the
compass of 5 or 6 inches & all but one full
[XX] of
nuts.

25-53 I still pick chestnuts Some larger ones prove
[XX] to
contain double meatsdivided as it were XXX-

as with a knife {DRAWING} each
[XX] part
having the common {DRAWING}
division

the brown skin transverse to them.

24-53 The shaggy hazel nuts now greet the eyes
[XX] always
an agreeable sight to me with which when

boy I used to take the stains of berries out of
[XX] my
hands & mouth(as some eat a salad
[XX] after
a berry pudding.) These & green grapes

found at berry time
[XX] Chestnutevidently
because it is packed
