The Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods Library The Walter Harding Collection in the Thoreau Society Collections A Guide to the Collection Collection Summary Creator: Walter Harding (1917-1996) Title: Walter Harding Collection Abstract: This collection consists of the personal research collection of Walter Harding. Biography: Walter Harding held the title of Distinguished University Professor of American Literature at the State University of New York at Geneseo. He received his Master's Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he studied under noted Thoreau scholar, Raymond Adams. He held doctorates from St. Bonaventure University and from the State University of New York at Geneseo. In 1940 he was one of the founding members of the Thoreau Society. He served as Secretary for the Society, and was the editor of the Thoreau Society Bulletin, for more than fifty years. Walter Harding was widely acknowledged in his lifetime as the leading authority on Henry David Thoreau, authoring or contributing to more than thirty books and hundreds of articles. Collection Description: The Walter Harding Collection consists of approximately 86 linear feet of documents and three-thousand books, encompassing Harding's collecting efforts from the 1930s through1996.
