Since 1997, The
Walden Woods Project has hosted pioneering place-based summer professional development seminars
for high school and
middle school teachers.
Educators spend
two-weeks at the Walden Woods Project's Thoreau Institute in Lincoln,
Massachusetts immersing themselves in the literature of Thoreau and
studying the same landscape he studied in his lifetime. Daily lessons
are geared toward understanding Thoreau's strategy of observation and
the values that inform and emerge from such practices. Teachers develop
place-based lesson plans using their own home communities as
classrooms.
