Richard
F. Fleck
is the author of numerous books and articles on
Native American culture, including
Henry Thoreau and John Muir Among the Indians
(1985), Critical
Perspectives on Native American
Literature
(1993 and reprinted 1997) and the just-published
Breaking Through the Clouds
containing an account of his climbing the sacred Black Hills
of South Dakota, a hitherto unpublished prayer of the holy
man of the Oglalla Sioux, Black Elk (1863-1951), and his
thoughts as he covers some of the same ground as Henry David
Thoreau.
In
his beautiful collection of climbing essays, we meet Fleck,
a lifelong mountaineer and adventurer, as a young man,
first exploring Colorado with unrivaled exuberance. From
those early days as a ranger in Rocky Mountain National
Park, to hiking in the La Sal Range of Utah, to a familial
adventure to Mt. Fuji, he demonstrates on unparalleled
appreciation and insight into mountaineering. His
descriptive essays are filled with stories of climbing with
family and friends, and with the many insights he has gained
through a life lived close to nature.
